Next Top Boss is an innovative challenge programme managed and delivered by Thurrock Council in partnership with Thurrock Thames Gateway Development Corporation and Team Thurrock – a powerful group of local businesses, community groups, training providers and young people committed to the successful delivery of the programme in Thurrock.
Next Top Boss is a fun competition that uses team work and a variety of activities to help you prepare for your career and the world of work.

We have a series of exciting activities to help you work out what your dreams are and to help you on the road to reaching them. Seize the range of opportunities for work and business experience that Next Top Boss has created in Thurrock and beyond – challenge yourself and Next Top Boss will help you gain more confidence, help you to know what you want to do, what you’re good at and how to get there!
Anyone who lives, works or studies in Thurrock and is ages 16 – 19 but not older than 20 on 31st August 2011 can take part. The Next Top Boss programme is set up for everyone to feel they can join in and is structured to suit a range of interests and skills – creative, practical, writing, ideas, debating, information and communications technology, mathematical, scientific, business, organising, communicating and much more.
What are the challenges?
BRAND ACADEMY
The First Challenge is to form your team, to devise a name that reflects the character and aspirations and image for your team, devise a strap line and logo that can go on to your Team T-shirt.
Team Branding is the branding of a group or team. This identity lets the audience know that you are a group and is driven by a collective passion for the same purpose.
The branding of a team supports your brand values, defines who you are as a group and helps to create a positive image. An effective team brand can reinforce the strength of your team and separate you from your competition.
You will make a presentation film - a quick 1 minute piece to: Introduce your team, Say where you are from, Say why you are taking part in the competition and Explain your:
- Team Name
- Tagline
- Colour And Typeface
- Design
- And most importantly…Why you are going to win?
DESTINATION THURROCK
Looks at how we can attract businesses and new development to Thurrock to enhance the prosperity of the place and the people who live here. How can we market the area?
Branding is “selling a promise”, promising a benefit or feeling with a brand – what are we trying to sell about Thurrock and How to get more visitors to Thurrock
What’s on offer in Thurrock? What’s good? What’s bad? How to promote an opportunity or create something new. Who’s the audience - young people? More families? or more retired people?
Destination Thurrock asks you to create an advert - poster, press article, video storyboard, radio script, film.
GREEN SOLUTIONS
Green Solutions looks at how businesses can be more efficient in their use of energy, water and waste resources, not just to cut their cost but because it helps to create a sustainable business environment. Your challenge is to develop a green or ethical product or service – how to make sure the business has positive effects– on waste generated, on reducing energy use, on recycling and on giving back a product or service into the local community.
Business Challenges
You can choose between a host of challenges set by the businesses themselves or you can create your own challenge. The businesses have set real business challenges - they’re problems these organisations are actually facing today, and your solutions might be used. The youth engagement workers have the full set of detailed challenges available when you register but some are described below. Mentors from the businesses will be able to help you understand the businesses better and to assist with your work:
- Canute - established in Purfleet in 1977 and grown from two vehicles delivering building materials to become a global supply chain provider. But how to change the image of ‘white van man’?
- Lloyds TSB Bank - part of the Lloyds Banking Group with a 300 year heritage of providing banking facilities to 30 million customers.
- RWEnpower runs Tilbury Power Station, and an Energy and Environment Centre. RWEnpwer offers an exciting challenge, a real hands on challenge for budding scientists, engineers, business people and designers.
- Palmers College - Palmer’s College is an independent sixth-form college offering a range of A-levels, BTEC and IB courses.
- Petroplus is the largest independent refiner and wholesaler of petroleum products in Europe and has refineries in the UK, Belgium Switzerland, France and Germany. Since 1953 Coryton Refinery produces premium quality petrol, diesel and jet fuel from its 370 acres.
- Royal Opera House works with more than 100 schools as part of the wider ROH Education and community engagement programme in Thurrock. The High House Production Park incorporates the UK’s first national centre of excellence for technical and backstage skills for the performing arts, and adjoins the new National Creative Skills Academy. Come and look round as part of the exciting hands-on ROH challenge – working on an interactive web site application.
- Thurrock Council is responsible for a range of services including business support and education. It consists of 49 councillors, and is the largest local employer. The local authority challenge is how to promote the services and work of local government and to come up with some ideas to make the services the Council provides more cost effective.
- DP World constructing the largest deep water container port in the region and keen to promote the employment opportunities, trade and investment, and work to the wildlife of the area to local people, businesses and beyond. The challenge is to devise a way using any aspect of social media to celebrate and promote the opportunities DPWorld is creating.
- Lakeside Shopping Centre - one of the most popular destinations around!
- University of East London has more than 20,000 students from 120 countries, one of the UK’s most diverse and fastest growing universities. It operates the Learning Shop in Grays where you can meet the youth engagement workers and discuss your challenges.
- Lakeside Hammers - an exciting challenge for an exciting venue – but how too promote it to young people? This is your challenge!
