Lakeside Hammers Speedway

The Hammers are based just near the Lakeside Shopping Centre in Thurrock, racing every Friday night from March through to October in the Elite League, the top tier of British speedway.  

The growth of the team over the last five years has been remarkable.   Established for over 25 years, but taken into new ownership from the 2007 season, the Club progressed in 2008 to realise its first ambition of securing a place in the season-ending play-offs. Grand finalists and finishing a hugely successful joint first position in the table, the team followed that up by reaching the play-offs for the second consecutive season in 2009 also securing Knock out Cup glory.

Falling just short of the play-offs in 2010, the Elite league title itself is the Club’s ambition for the 2011 season.

The 2011 season also sees the launch of a new national league team, racing alongside the Hammers at our Arena Essex Raceway venue.   Racing in the third tier of the sport, essentially a launch pad for future speedway stars, the team will race under the iconic name of The Hackney Hawks.

If you are unaware of speedway, it’s a unique action packed motorbike sport where four riders, two from each team, race around a shale track reaching speeds of up to 70mph. It’s also worth adding that the bikes, which in power to weight ratio have quicker acceleration than a F1 car, reaching 0-60mph in 3 seconds also have no brakes..!  

Speedway is a fantastic family night out, where crowds of all ages mix together and unlike many other professional sports, all of the riders are accessible to fans before and after the meeting.

We currently employ 923 full-time and 518 retained firefighters, along with a support staff of 253 working from our control, training, workshops and service locations.

Thurrock Museum

Boasting 240 listed buildings, 15 scheduled buildings of national importance, 23 ancient woodlands as well as 6 conservation areas and protected landscapes, not often obvious to the eye, Thurrock has a rich and varied heritage - however change is all around us and our modern day history is still being written and new discoveries made.
 
In our small way Thurrock Museum, as part of Communities, Library & Cultural Services, within the Community Well Being Directorate of Thurrock Council, strives to work closely with the communities of Thurrock to help us all understand, preserve & appreciate the influences that have helped fashion our area to become how we know it today.
 
Thurrock Museum Gallery is a great place to get an overview of our complex and diverse history & heritage; with associated archives and written histories to be found in the Local Studies area part of Grays Library (both situated on the 1st floor of the Thameside Complex, Orsett Road, Grays).
 
The Gallery displays over 1,500 objects interpreting some 400,000 years of occupation in Thurrock through permanent display, and temporary exhibitions, as well as Museum staff offering heritage walks, club & society talks, and educational services to local schools. We are lucky that 99% of our collection has been donated by local people who feel that the museum is the correct place to safe guard our past.

The Prince’s Trust

The Prince’s Trust in the East of England offer personal development opportunities for young people who fall into four target groups: unemployed – especially those who have been out of work for more than 6-months, educational underachievers – that is those who do not achieve the standard 5 GCSEs at Grade 3 or above, offenders and ex-offenders – those that are currently or within previous 12 months under the supervision of a criminal justice agency and care leavers – those who are ‘looked after’ by the local authority up to the age of 21 years.

In brief, the Knowledge Thurrock initiative is a part funded project that provides short-term student and post-graduate placements for a 6 week duration. Targetting Thurrock businesses, the placements are supported by academics from the University of East London, Anglia Ruskin University and South Essex College.

Essex Police

Essex Police operates across 1,400 square miles, an area that houses five large towns, an airport and one of the largest coastlines in the UK.

Essex has a population of just over 1.6 million but Stansted together with the ports of Tilbury and Harwich bring millions of visitors to the UK via our county every year.

The county is home to large urban towns and small rural villages linked by a number of key roads including the M25, M11, A12 and A13. For policing purposes we split Essex into five territorial divisions plus Stansted Airport. These are supported by three centrally co-ordinated

Davy Down Riverside Park

The Davy Down Riverside Park is a place where visitors can relax and enjoy the countryside and wildlife in the midst of reminders of our industrial heritage – the old Waterworks Pumphouse and the impressive brickwork of the Stifford railway viaduct.

Here visitors will find a peaceful location to while away a few hours, to seek out some unusual sculptures or to watch patiently for kingfishers, water voles, and other creatures.

For those wishing to venture further, it is the gateway to the Mardyke Valley with easy walking through the picturesque valley to the Mardyke Woods and on to Ship Lane, Aveley (2.5 km, 1.5 m),

The more adventurous can take a longer walk through the Stifford Meadows and then across the open fens to Bulphan, following a bridle way at the river’s side (7 km, 4 m).

Davy Down is open to pedestrians and access to a parking area is possible for vehicles (height restriction 6’ 6”) 24 hours a day.  Motor bikes and horses are not permitted.

Special Open Days are held during the year when a variety of activities are organised, the Pumphouse is open and light refreshments are available.

Connexions Thurrock

Youth and Connexions brings together elements of universal support as well as targeted youth work provision; which supports a range of opportunities for young people to engage and inform service delivery. One of our key aims is to ensure that young people remain in education employment or training and we achieve this by working with a range of partners from across the Local Authority, including private and third sector engagement.

Our main remit is to:

Reduce numbers of young people who are NEET.

Provide access to universal information, advice and guidance.

Deliver positive activities and access to youth work personal and social development programmes.

Deliver targeted support to those at risk of not progressing.

Support volunteering and community involvement.

Support young people to have a voice.

Provide a range of support functions to support front line operations.

Services are delivered across a wide range of venues including and a range of different interventions including Detached work, One Stop Shop, Outdoor Centres, Mobile Units and Schools. Critical to the work of Youth and Connexions is working in partnership with a range of other agencies and in particular with young people, in the design, delivery and evaluation of our services.

Royal Opera House Creative Partnerships is currently working with more than 100 schools as part of the wider ROH Education and community engagement programme in Thurrock and the Thames Gateway, providing long term innovative partnerships between education and the creative industries.

This work sits alongside the relocation of the ROH set and scenery production workshops to the new Royal Opera House Production Park in Purfleet, opening in autumn 2010. This will be the UK’s first national centre of excellence for technical and backstage skills for the performing arts, and will form a new creative hub in the Thames Gateway encouraging both investment and employment at the heart of Europe’s largest regeneration area.

Thurrock Thames Gateway Development Corporation

The idea for Next Top Boss came from the Thurrock Thames Gateway Development Corporation, which works to grow the Thurrock economy, creating jobs and boosting business as well as improving the environment and making Thurrock a better place to be. Since early 2009, the Development Corporation has drawn in many other local organizations, many of which are part of much larger national and international groups, to work on Next Top Boss.

We’re called Team Thurrock and our goals from the competition are:
- To help young people in our local area develop skills and to build the next generation of business talent
- To promote Thurrock as a great place to work and live
- To work together, sharing ideas and forging a stronger business community

Petroplus

Petroplus is the largest independent refiner and wholesaler of petroleum products in Europe and has refineries in the UK, Belgium Switzerland, France and Germany. Coryton Refinery has been part of Thurrock’s landscape since 1953, spans 370 acres and produces, amongst others, premium quality petrol, diesel and jet fuel. The refinery supplies around 40 per cent of the South East’s demand for transportation fuels.

The Refinery employes 500 Petroplus staff and between 400 – 500 contractors. Coryton is proud of its relationship with the Thurrock community and delighted to be able to contribute significantly to the local economy.

Palmer’s College is an award-winning independent sixth-form college.

RWE npower runs Tilbury Power Station, also home to an award-winning Energy and Environment Centre.

Havering college provides education for those aged 14 and up, tailoring their courses to the needs of individuals and employers. Havering College offer apprenticeships and the government-led Train to Gain and Skills For Life initiatives as well as courses from diploma to degree level.

Over 3,000 people have completed Open University degrees at Havering since 1992, with many more finding success with other qualifications. The college provides extensive support to students with facilities from childcare to counselling and disability services, giving access to learning to a large and diverse student body, regardless of their circumstances.

Communities and Local Government (CLG)

Communities and Local Government (CLG) is the Government department that works hard to create thriving, sustainable, vibrant communities that improve everyone’s quality of life. On behalf of Government we lead the Thames Gateway Programme. This is Europe’s largest economic development and regeneration programme and will transform the constellation of places that make up the Thames Gateway, including Thurrock.

Thurrock is already benefiting from being part of the Thames Gateway:

• the Royal Opera House Production Park will bring economic, cultural and social benefits to local communities;

• Wildspace parklands project and the improved visitor facilities at Rainham Marshes offer better leisure and tourist opportunities;

• plans for a new town centre for Purfleet and the competition to find the developer for the project continue to progress;

• there are also emerging plans for the regeneration of Grays and of Tilbury.
